Develomental Mathematics for the Primary School Teacher is designed to prepare incoming student-teachers for success in the Mathematics courses of the Associate of Arts in Primary Teacher Education. Major topics covered include the nature of Mathematics as a primary school subject, authentic problem solving and traditional problem solving, conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, role of problem-solving in student-centered learning and general understanding of the National Primary Mathematics Curriculum (especially the content strands and in particular the five Mathematics processes). Emphasis is placed on a variety of strategies including cooperative learning, problem-solving, use of technology, hands-on learning using manipulatives, cultural influences and cross content / integrated teaching strategies.
