We use logic every day to figure out test questions, plan our budgets, and decide who to date. We borrow from the vocabulary of logic when we say, "Brilliant deduction" or even "I don't want to argue about it." In the study of logic, however, each of these terms has a specific definition, and we must be clear on these if we are to communicate. Additionally, by studying and developing an ability to apply the mathematical principles of college algebra, the student will be prepared to study higher mathematics courses. Algebra is the language of mathematics. Much of the observable world can be characterized as having patterned regularity where a change in one quantity results in changes in other quantities. Through algebra and the use of variables and functions, mathematical models can be built which are essential to personal, scientific, economic, social, medical, artistic, and civic fields of inquiry.
