COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Covers the methods of summarizing statistical data and presenting the results in tabular and graphical forms; includes the calculation of mean and variance of grouped and ungrouped frequency distributions. Covers elementary probability theory (mutually exclusive events, conditional probability and independent events), correlation and regression.
RATIONALE:
STATISTICS is a tool which has as its primary function the task of extracting information from data. It allows for the making of optimally valid decisions in real-world situations.
It is, therefore, desirable that any statistics course should reflect the practical nature of the subject. Students should be engaged in realistic project exercises, so that they will be able to obtain data most economically, extract optimal information from the data and use the extracted information to make decisions.
The subject matter is flexible enough to address the needs of the student wishing to pursue more advanced studies as well as the needs of the student proceeding directly into the work place. It is also important to students in interpreting and analyzing events in a modern society.
This Statistical Analysis course places emphasis on understanding concepts, practical applications, student-driven projects and continuous assessment. The use of technology is encouraged and the student will be expected to report findings in appropriate statistical language and form.
